Old Age and Cancer

Old Age and Cancer

Old Age and Cancer

Ageing is considered as one of the single largest risk factors for developing the deadly Cancer. Cancer happens to be one of the five common causes of deaths in older Indians. With more and more people living longer and life spans increasing, the diagnosed cases of Cancer in elderly are expected to constantly rise. It is yet unclear as to why the risk of Cancer increases with old age, but the phenomenon cannot be denied. The probable reasons behind this could be the activation of Cancer stimulating genes with age and suppression of Cancer preventing genes, impaired cellular repair mechanism, over exposure to carcinogens, etc.

Certain types of Cancer are more likely to develop in people over the ages of fifty, like Cancer of the female genital tract, the head and the neck Cancer, lower and upper gastrointestinal tract cancer, prostate and pancreatic cancer. More than half of the haematological Cancers and breast cancers are seen in patients over the ages of sixty years.

The elderly, either due to lack of lack of interest for screening for Cancer or because of lack of awareness, whatever the reason; they often delay the diagnosis of the condition.  Some of the problems associated with elderly and cancer are:

  • Very often, the cancer is undertreated in elderly cancer patients. These patients are considered inappropriate for surgical procedures and are thought to be unable to tolerate chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Research to prove this  is inadequate as very little work has been done on very old patients of Cancer. It is advisable that age should not act as a deterrent while deciding the course of treatment for Cancer. Rather that thinking of the chronological age, the doctor should take into consideration the mental and physical state of the patient when judging the patient’s adequacy for a specific treatment.
  • When taken into consideration, the elderly who are terminal patient of cancer, the palliative care should be given equal importance like that in case of a younger patient. Psychological issues and distressing symptoms of older patients actually need more urgent palliative care. The most essential aspect of this care is providing relief from pain. Elderly patients too need symptomatic care.
  • Elderly patients of Cancer do have different treatment requirements in some situations. These older adults often suffer from chronic health conditions like arthritis, high blood pressure, heart diseases, etc, commonly referred to as comorbidities. These comorbidities have an effect on the cancer treatment.

Measures to prevent the occurrence of Cancer in any age are:

  • Taking a balanced diet that include fruits and vegetables
  • Quitting smoking
  • Exercising regularly
  • Maintaining a healthy body weight.

So, timely diagnosis, effective treatment and the right care is necessary to enable good prognosis for the cancer patients.

Be cautious of Placenta Praevia

You must have heard about Low line placenta from your relatives and friends during their pregnancy phases. So let’s get to understand what it means and how your pregnancy may be different from the normally placed placenta ones.

Medically, the low line placenta is recognized as Placenta praevia. So, if you find this word on your ultrasound scan, then be prepared what about your gynecologist will tell you in your next visit.

What is Placenta Praevia?

Placenta is an area of attachment of the mother and developing foetus, where the baby draws all nutrition via the umbilical cord. Within the uterus, when the placenta lies close to the internal os (from where the baby will make an exit on the D day) or else in the lower uterine segment, then the condition is tagged as placenta praevia.

What causes Placenta Praevia?

Though not much is known over the aetiology, but most recognise it in case of twins where placental surface is bigger than the normal and conveniently extends till the lower portions. Also, increased maternal age and previous history of caesarean do have their role to play.

When can a Placenta Praevia be detected?

Many would-be-mothers believe that in the 10th week of pregnancy, placenta praevia can be scanned. Actually Placental situation can’t be marked before the 20 weeks scan to be precise. Most likely, a 10 weeks low line is expected to make it to the upper segment and relieve all issues. It is not the placenta that moves, but the uterus expands corresponding to the baby size and changes; that causes the uplift.

Severity of Placenta Praevia

The condition can be seen to occur in 4 types: where the first is just marginally placed on the lower segment, type 2 where placenta has just reached the opening but doesn’t cover it. Type 3 is where placenta does cover the opening, but partially and in the last type 4 the opening is surmounted completely by the placenta.

Complications of Placenta Praevia

During pregnancy

  • A varying degree of bleeding is reported with placenta praevia
  • Mal presentations, as the baby is not able to take the normal position already occupied by the placenta, and thus may lie with head up or in a transverse position.
  • Sex would be a strict no throughout 9 months, as it may raise the chances of miscarriage, premature delivery and related complications.
  • Premature labour chances are high; sometimes it needs to be induced as well.

During labour

  • Chances of caesarean increase with a low lie, especially in type 4 you may be way informed about the odds of you to have a normal delivery.
  • Placental complications, like retained placenta, early rupture and post partum bleeding will be marked.
  • Foetus may too have the share and may present with low birth weight. Even intrauterine death may occur in case a cord mishap occurs in between, birth injuries, congenital malformations that are like three times more common in placenta praevia gestations.

What to do?

Once diagnosed you need to be quite vigilant:

  • Never ignore any kind of bleeding, even a trivial one.
  • Watch in case you find any mass within the bleeding, and do preserve it for further investigations in a sterile cloth.
  • Immediate hospitalisation and consultation
  • Resting is a must within the phase. In case you are the lucky one to escape it all as majorly do, you just need to rest a bit extra and stay cautious. Further, keeping a pillow under feet and lying left side is recommended.

With medical advances, things have been sorted well. But you need to act intelligently and never hesitate to discuss even a slightest of doubt.

Beware of the E.Coli

Beware of the E.Coli

Beware of the E.Coli

What is E.Coli

Let us begin by telling you that all strains of E.Coli are not harmful for the humans. The E.Coli or Escherichia coli bacterium can get transmitted from the food like meats and vegetables to your intestines. Generally these strains of E.Coli help the body manufacture vitamin K2, i.e. instrumental in preventing the entry of harmful pathogens into the intestine. E.Coli also helps in the breakdown and digestion of food.

But some strains of E.Coli have the potency to escape the intestine and enter the blood stream. This can cause a severe infection and intense food poisoning.

Sources of E.Coli Infection:

  • Consumption of inadequately cooked meat
  • Drinking water that may contain strains of E.Coli
  • Drinking raw (unpasteurized) milk
  • Close proximity to cattle

Symptoms of a person infected with E.Coli infection:

  • Pain in the stomach
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea, at times with blood

Preventing E.Coli infection:

Like any other diseases, prevention is better than cure. Let us tell you a few effective ways to protect yourself from an E.Coli infection.

1.    Always wash your hands scrupulously clean before you start cooking to prevent infection from E.Coli
2.    All types of meat should be cooked till there is no pink visible anywhere
3.    Take care not to taste raw bites of uncooked meat or beef to check the seasoning as it can cause infection from E.Coli
4.    Never use the utensil that has been used to store raw meat, to keep cooked food
5.    All meats should be ideally cooked to at least the temperature of 155 degree Fahrenheit. One can also use a meat thermometer to make sure the ideal temperature is reached to ensure protection from E.Coli infection
6.    Store raw meat and poultry materials separate from other food items
7.    One should try to always defrost meat either in the refrigerator of the microwave, do not let it stand on the counter to defrost on its own, as this can spread the E.Coli infection
8.    It is advisable to use different cutting boards for cutting raw meat and poultry and vegetables. If you have to use the same board, take care to wash the cutting board with warm water and soap before using it for cutting vegetables
9.    Avoid drinking raw milk to prevent E.Coli infection
10.    If you have to store food items, keep them refrigerated or frozen
11.    Either refrigerate leftovers immediately or discard them or they can become potential sources of E.Coli infection
12.    For people suffering from Diarrhea, it is recommended that they should wash their hands frequently with soap and warm water for at least 30 second each time to prevent E.Coli infection
13.    For those working in close proximity to elderly, it is advisable that they wash their hands frequently too
14.    When ordering food in a restaurant, make sure to mention that the meat should be cooked, till no pink shows in it

A little care and you can surely stay away from the E.Coli Infection.

Anemia and Pregnancy

Anemia and Pregnancy

Anemia and Pregnancy

Iron deficiency Anemia occurs when the red blood cells in our body do not have iron in enough quantity or is deficient in iron or hemoglobin count. Iron is important as it carries oxygen to all parts of the body. The regular symptoms of anemia are tiredness and breathlessness.

Who suffer from Anemia?

Before a woman gets pregnant, the regular need of iron for the body is around 15 mg each day. But during pregnancy the need almost doubles- it becomes around 30mg per day. Intake of iron in pregnancy becomes very important to encourage the health and growth of the baby. When your body becomes deficient in hemoglobin or iron, you suffer from anemia.

What is the impact of Anemia on the Pregnant woman and the baby?

If anemia is diagnosed early and treated immediately during pregnancy, it does not pose any danger. Since the baby is in developmental stage, it needs maximum amount of iron supplies, mostly in the second trimester. Hence, the doctors advise to watch the intake of iron rich foods during pregnancy.  According to many doctors, anemia can lead to pre term delivery and also low weight in the baby. It has been found that women with good iron content have low risk of oxygen deficiency during childbirth.

How to prevent Anemia during pregnancy?

Apart from increasing the intake of iron rich food, combination of protein and iron helps the most in enhancing the hemoglobin levels. Increasing animal protein also proves to be effective. Hence, if anemia is to be prevented during pregnancy, try to include animal proteins like fish, chicken and lean red meat in your diet. If you are a strict vegetarian, along with pulses consume green vegetables like fenugreek, spinach, bathua, mustard, coriander and mint.  Some other iron increasing food items include soya protein, whole meal bread and flour, potatoes, iron fortified cereals, prunes, raisins and fruits like pomegranate, apricots, bananas, plumps and black grapes. Vitamin C has also been known to help your body absorb iron better. Hence drinking orange juice in good amount can also help to prevent anemia. Fizzy drinks, colas, coffee and tea reduce the chances of full absorption of iron in your body, so try to avoid them or at least cut down on their intake.

What is the treatment for Anemia?

If you are diagnosed with anemic condition during pregnancy, your doctor will advise you to make various changes in your diet so as to elevate the hemoglobin in blood. He/she may even recommend iron supplements if you have very low iron content. One of the side effects of iron supplements is constipation, so when you are advised iron supplements try to include more fiber in your diet to eliminate constipation. To add fiber you can increase the intake of raw salads like beetroot, radish, onion, carrot, tomatoes and cucumber. Lemon enriched in vitamin C too can be added to the list. Also, the presence of this vitamin will help to quickly absorb the iron in the body.

Walk Away Diabetes

Walk away Diabetes

Walk away Diabetes

Anything said on the benefits of walking will still be less, walking is such a good form of exercise. Walking not only helps rin educing weight, but also cuts down on the risk of Diabetes, according to the latest study that appeared online in the British Medical Journal.

The latest study on Diabetes

A number of studies in the past have enumerated the benefits of walking on the decrease of Body Mass Index and insulin resistance, thus Diabetes. But this first of its kind study focuses on the effects of long term changes in daily step count on insulin sensitivity, the first phase of Diabetes. The research was conducted by the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, Melbourne, and observed 592 middle aged Australians between 2000 and 2005. While computing the results other factors like lifestyle and diet, alcohol and smoking were also taken into account. An increased daily step count spanning across five years translated into a lower BMI (Body Mass Index), reduced waist to hip ratio and improved insulin sensitivity, thus keeping away Diabetes. The results were basically attributed to a change in the adiposity (fatness) over five years according to the authors. The researchers summarized that a sedentary person with an initial less number of daily steps who slowly improve their daily steps to match the recommended level of 10,000 steps daily by the end of five years, will have three times more insulin sensitivity. This will help them to ward off Diabetes as compared to a person who increases their daily step to the now advised 3,000 steps for five days a week. So , walking is not only beneficial for patients with Diabetes but actually therapeutic too.

Other benefits of Walking for patients with Diabetes

The other benefits accrued to walking for people with Diabetes are:

• Controlled Glucose levels: Walking and other forms of physical exercise speeds up the absorption of blood sugar, thereby preventing it from accumulating in the blood stream. This phenomenon generally lasts only for either a few hours or maximum few days. This is the reason why it is essential to keep walking or exercising regularly for consistent control of level of glucose in the blood for people with Diabetes.

• Improved Cardiovascular Health: People with Diabetes are especially vulnerable to Heart disorders and walking prevents development of these disorders in them.

• Weight Management: Walking works wonders in controlling weight. Maintaining an ideal weight will not only lessen a number of health risks but will also do good to people with Diabetes. Excess weight can worsen the severity of symptoms of Diabetes.

Precautions before setting off to Walk for people with Diabetes

A few precautions are recommended for people with Diabetes before they start on their Walking Expedition, namely

Consulting a physician: People with Diabetes should take advice from their doctor before beginning any physical exercise that will try to increase his/her stamina. The doctor will take into account the patients blood glucose levels, fitness state and other factors before giving the go-ahead.

Caring for the Foot: People with Diabetes need to give special attention to their foot care, as foot numbness is one of the major symptoms of Diabetes that makes blisters, skin injuries of the feet difficult to detect. What is even more bothersome is that these take time to heal and are vulnerable to infection as people with Diabetes have a decreased blood flow in the small blood vessels of the extremities. So people with Diabetes need to take special care of the foot if they decide to embark on walking.

The Right Shoes: It is impossible to start walking without proper walking shoes. Remember walking shoes and running shoes are two different things. Walking shoes are those that have flatter and broader soles to aid balance while walking. The shoes should be a comfortable fit with plenty of room available for your toes. Do not forget socks. Cotton socks tend to wet with moisture, so it is preferable to wear socks of synthetic materials.

Now you are well-equipped and ready to start the walk, Happy walking!

Give your child a helping hand during an Epilepsy Attack

Give your child a helping hand during an Epilepsy Attack

Give your child a helping hand during an Epilepsy Attack

Epilepsy, in broader terms can be defined as a series of seizures that are characterised by the abnormal brain functions, presenting in form of erratic behavior, movement and actions.

Here, the level of awareness at times is almost zero and may leave the sufferer lying on ground helpless, asking the near ones to come to rescue and relieve them from the agony. Particularly in children the situation is indeed tricky. Being parent of an epileptic child can be challenging.

The following are a few simple steps that will help every parent combat odds and would enlighten about the techniques to keep the neurological trouble at bay:

  • Recognise potent triggers: Starvation, agitation, scolding and even a trivial game win and loss, extreme happiness or anger, sudden season change, travelling and so on can initiate epilepsy attack. So try to make a list of all and keep them as distant as possible.
  • Try to keep the child away from the potential dangers: As mentioned above, try keeping epilepsy triggers away from the innocent child.
  • Recognise early signs and abort an attack: Often the pre epilepsy signs are catchy and can be easily deciphered. Try taking a note and act accordingly to help the child make a slim escape.
  • Within the epilepsy attack: Stuff a cloth or log so that the child doesn’t bite his / her tongue or roll back to interfere in respiration.
  • Try minimising the activity of the child within the epilepsy attack as the child may get hurt in the struggle. For instance, he/she may land up on a knife within the abnormal phase and later may have to bear the pain.
  • Open windows and let the fresh air in.
  • Give some water and keep the child hydrated.
  • Call up your family doctor: Within the process, ask any other family member to inform the consulting physician.
  • In case you see blueness, respiratory trouble or an extensive epilepsy attack, don’t wait and instead take the child to the emergency.  Or else immediately call an ambulance.
  • Understand: Epilepsy makes thousands of victims worldwide. But being a parent one must understand the handicap and keep the child safe and sound with every step progressing towards a healthier life ahead.
  • Be regular: Time to time keep seeking medical help. The regular medical intervention is just an assurance that the child is alright and doesn’t mean that he / she is suffering. Also, these checkups timely reveal and also give the doctor enough time to act and control any foreseen trouble.
  • Be strong: Handling such situations can be hard; leaving parents in spills of tears but try be strong and act intelligent within the attack rather than feeling helpless and crying all the time. Understand that your child needs genuine help and not just the emotional upsets, so keep that for later.
  • Give a shoulder: Once the child revives, there may be times when he / she may not even remember a thing from the epilepsy attack and give blank looks finding the situation a bit odd. Try support and give an emotional hand.
  • Educate the child of the condition: Keeping him / her away from the domain thinking that the young brain would not be able to take it would be foolish. Explain everything possible to the child as well and tell him / her that you are always there for all the help he / she needs.
  • Be responsible: Never leave the counselling / explanation part to the doctor alone. When young the child is most attached to the parents and a stranger explaining and trying being sweet about a health concern may aggravate. Take a step forward and work in conjunction with the medical expertise to help your child.
